In 1973, parent company Burton Group launched a major expansion of its women’s clothing division and split Top Shop by Peter Robinson into two chains, which became known as Peter Robinson and Top Shop. Peter Robinson’s top shop buyer Diane Wadey had an eye for young talent and introduced Jeff Cooper and Ronnie Stirling, Royal College of Art graduate Jane Whiteside.
Does Topshop still exist in Great Britain?
During her tenure, Topshop became a major sponsor of London Fashion Week and sponsored her Newgen branch, which supports up-and-coming British designers from 2002, and a year later the Fashion East initiative, which acts as a bridge between London’s fashion colleges and the Newgen program. Topshop began in the 1960s as a brand extension of the Peter Robinson department store and originally sold fashion by young British designers such as Mary Quant and Stirling Cooper. People are going to be “pretty shocked when they hit the high street again,” says Jane Shepherdson, who was the most powerful woman in British retail as brand director of Topshop in the early 1990s. Three years later, US private equity firm Leonard Green bought a 25 percent stake in Topshop for a reported 350 million pounds.
