Mauritius is an Island country in the Indian Ocean, located off the eastern coast of Africa with population of over 1.6 million people. Coconut chutney – complements a spicy curry, originated from India
Mauritian sea dish – it forms major part in stews, curry and other dishes
Mithai – Indian dish turn Mauritian, sweet and buttery
Curries – made with curries, garlic, onion and curry leaves, often served with rice
Vindaye – dry curry often cooked with thick fish chunks or octopus, or meat or chicken
Bol renverse – rice topped with fried omelette
Roti Chaud – flat bread served with various curries and pickle
Mine frites – fried noodles, topped with fried onions and chilli
Sept cari – mixed of seven curries, served on special events like Hindu wedding

Palm heart salad – made from cut trunk of old palm tree, eaten with salad
Boulettes – steamed dumplings made from fish, minced meat, prawns, calamari and chayote
Gateau piment – snack made from yellow split peas, seasoned with onions and green chilli
Dim sums – bite-sized portions of vegetables or meat, usually served with chutneys
Dholl puri and roti – Indian styled flatbreads stuffed with yellow split peas
Briyani – made from basmati rice, lots of herbs and spices for the flavour
Mauritius is characterized by plants, non-marine birds, reptiles, marine animals and bat species. In the coastal areas, mangrove covers up to 14km. The environmental protection and conservation organization (EPCO) is a local NGO in Mauritius. Its primary goal is to protect and ensure conservation of the environment for sustainable development.
